Scots TV presenter Lorraine Kelly has created quite the row with Tory leadership hopeful Esther McVey.

Now former GMTV host Fiona Philips has waded into the debate to pick holes in McVey’s version of events.

After interviewing Esther on Monday’s GMB, Susanna Reid asked Lorraine if she remembered her from their GMTV days, to which she pursed her lips and said “Yeah” before quickly changing the subject.

Afterwards McVey claimed that the pair’s feud stemmed from her promotion on GMTV to host with Eamonn Holmes.

Fiona Phillips has had plenty to say on the incident

Asked about what went on between the pair, she said: “Well we used to share a dressing room, and she used to be on the programme afterwards, and obviously she used to be partnered with Eamonn Holmes, then I was promoted to be partnering with Eamonn Holmes.

“But, she’s great and it was a great show, and I can’t believe it, I think it was 20 years ago I did that show, but never mind, it was really good at the time, it was really good fun.

But Fiona Philips says McVey is ‘lying’ about what happened.

Writing for the Mirror , Fiona claimed that her version of events wasn’t true.

She said: “My mum told me at a very young age: ‘don’t bother telling untruths because you’ll always get found out’.

“I wonder if Tory Leadership hopeful, Esther McVey was told that as a child?

“Following an embarrassing exchange during an interview on Monday’s Good Morning Britain, Esther was left squirming when Piers Morgan asked Lorraine Kelly for her memories of working with the Tory Leadership hopeful during a short stint at GMTV in 1999.

“Lorraine looked as though she’d sniffed something foul, and replied ‘I don’t remember’.

“Strange that, seeing as Esther reckons she’d been so good at her job at the breakfast station that she “was promoted to be partnering with Eamonn Holmes”.

“How strange because she didn’t have a job at GMTV until she covered my three month maternity in 1999.

“How could she have been ‘promoted’, then, from a job she’d never held in the first place? Hmmmm.”

Fiona later told Mail Online : “Esther said that she had been promoted. But that is an absolute lie. She was only on there because she was covering my maternity leave.

“During which I was asked several times by colleagues pleading to know when I was coming back. Esther was never presenting there permanently. She was at Channel Five I think at the time and she was jobbing, just trying to get work.

“But I don’t know because I wasn’t there. She said she had been promoted. But she wasn’t even there to be promoted. You don’t embellish your CV.”

Yesterday Piers Morgan asked Lorraine about her feud with McVey she denied there was a ‘battle’.

She said: “I had my own show since 1992, I don’t actually think she joined until five years later.”

Lorraine then revealed the real reason for her snub is McVey’s politics

She fumed: “I’m sick to the back teeth of the whole toxic political atmosphere.

“I strongly disagree with [McVey] on LGBT rights and I just thought to myself, ‘I’ve had enough of this.’

“We’ve had two and a half years of going round in circles and not sorting Brexit out and now we’ve got a state in Britain where people are at each other’s throats and it’s got to stop.”

Lorraine then revealed who she would personally like to see run in the Tory leadership race – someone a little closer to home.

She said: “I’m really disappointed actually that Ruth Davidson’s not standing because she’s one of the few human beings who’s actually in politics right now.”
